A beginner’s guide to reading a stroke

Learn the observation habit before studying exceptions.

Name the objects

Use consistent names for the striker, queen and each player’s pieces. In a sketch, label colours with words as well as shading.

Watch one stroke

In practice, pause after everything has stopped and describe what happened. Do not move pieces while the group is still trying to understand the layout.

Build a question

A useful question includes a starting condition, an action and an observed result. Keep the question separate from the proposed answer.

Work from simple to complex

Begin with a sparse practice layout. Add another condition only when you can explain why it changes the question.
